Based in Cape Town, but originally from Buenos Aires, Portenios SA are a tango band made up mainly of family members – Silvia Otero (vocals), Alberto Otero (guitar), Natasha Otero (cello), Valeria Otero (dancer) and Leon Oosthuizen (keys). They perform arrangements of iconic tango songs, bringing their Argentinian heritage to South African audiences.

An accomplished guitarist, Alberto Otero was introduced to the tango scene at a young age, playing for well-known Buenos Aires groups and solo singers with his father. Silvia Otero is a talented singer with years of experience in different outfits of various genres.

Together, they take listeners on a musical journey through Buenos Aires, shedding light on tango’s diverse roots and sensual nature. The show is a charismatic introduction to the passion of Argentine tango, delivered with great emotion and high-level musicianship, and the dancers add to the nostalgic atmosphere.

Photographing the Otero family performing is always a pleasure, although getting good shots of the band and the dancers in a tight space – and without getting in anyone’s way – comes with its own challenges. Here they are performing at Weltevreden Estate in Stellenbosch as part of the Toyota US Woordfees in March 2020.
